HEART/NSTA Trust Ignites Youth Inspiration Across Jamaica with National School Tour Series.

“Protect the Environment: Our Land, Our Duty, Our Future”

In a spirited display of patriotism and unity, the Community Engagement Department of the HEART/NSTA Trust led a transformative Labour Day project at Tavares Gardens Primary School on Friday, May 23, 2025. Guided by this year’s national theme, “Protect the Environment: Our Land, Our Duty, Our Future,” the initiative brought together volunteers, resources, and heart to refresh and reimagine the school’s environment.

HEART staff volunteers from various departments came out in strong support, lending their time, skills, and energy to the project. The collaborative effort underscored the Trust’s commitment to community development and environmental stewardship while promoting a culture of service and civic responsibility among staff.

The day’s activities saw a wave of colour sweep across the campus as volunteers painted walls, staircases, corridors, tree trunks, and even old tyres, breathing new life into the school compound. The vibrant palette not only uplifted the physical space but also inspired joy and pride among students, staff, and residents of the surrounding community.

Environmental consciousness was a key pillar of the initiative. Several trees were planted around the school grounds, contributing to national reforestation efforts and creating shaded, green areas that support both learning and leisure. In a push toward better waste management, the team also donated 4 brand-new garbage and recycling skips, made by the Trust’s Training Based Enterprise, National Tool & Engineering Institute, encouraging proper disposal habits and environmental responsibility among students.

Among the day’s most impactful contributions was the construction of a brand-new guardhouse, built entirely from the ground. The new structure now provides a secure station for school security personnel and enhances the overall safety infrastructure of the school. This initiative not only demonstrates the trust objective to community development but also showcases the practical skills and teamwork of its staff and trainees. Students, staff, and visitors will now benefit from improved entry point management, contributing to a more secure and organized learning environment.

“This project is more than a makeover, it’s a message to the students and the community that they are valued and supported,” said a representative from the Community Engagement Department. “We’re especially proud that so many of our colleagues from various departments and offices across Kingston came together for this cause. It’s a true reflection of what HEART is all about service, unity, and transformation,” said Ronique Rhoden, Director of Community Engagement.

The project at Tavares Gardens Primary School forms part of the HEART/NSTA Trust’s wider mission to uplift underserved communities and contribute to national development through practical service and technical excellence. Led by trainees and staff, the initiative also positions the school as a gateway for parents to learn about and apply for HEART programmes, leveraging this new partnership to expand access and awareness.

As students return to an improved and more inspiring learning environment, the impact of this Labour Day effort will be felt long after the paint dries. Through collaboration, compassion, and care for the environment, HEART/NSTA Trust continues to empower communities, one meaningful project at a time.
