The Work Based Training/MSME support unit, is responsible for:
- Providing strategic and operational direction for services focused on the engagement and training of individuals and facilitating employment opportunities for them in keeping with the mandate of the Trust.
- Providing oversight in the execution of marketing, placement, monitoring, and facilitation of training and assessment activities for all Work Based Training (WBT) towards their professional development and industry recognised certification.
This unit is aimed at increasing the HEART/NSTA Trust footprint in the national MSME ecosystem.
The Work Based Training (WBT) process involves:
- Recruiting
- Registering of contracts
- Enrolment and orientation
- Training (theory and practical)
- Stipend payment
- Assessment Monitoring and Evaluation
The programmes include:

- HOPE Youth Summer Work Programme
- Work Based Training (for all levels of trainees)

- MSME & Trainee Business Start-up

Empowerment Programme
This programme aims to provide empowerment to persons with mild intellectual disabilities and physical disabilities. Supported by a Job Coach, it involves a three (3) week non-residential camp tailored to improve personal, professional and social capacity for future employment.
At the end of this programme, enrollees are supported expect to:
- Strengthen key employability skills/Core Skills, foster spirit of altruism, philanthropy and active citizenship
- Exhibit of commitments to volunteering and be supported by a Mentor
This programme is designed for persons between the ages 17 – 34 years old with intellectual disabilities with a referral from a Special Education Institution.
Duration: 6 months
Delivery Modality: Face-to-face and On-the-job

HOPE Youth Summer Work Programme (HYSWP)
This programme is geared towards the development of young persons, facilitating opportunities to earn valuable work experience and making them more productive and efficient employees.
At the end of this programme, enrollees are supported to:
- Develop key employability and job maintenance skills.
- Exhibit commitments to volunteering and be supported by a Mentor
This programme is aimed at persons between the ages 17-29 years.
Duration: 3 Weeks (June, July or August)

School Leavers’ Training Opportunities Programme (SLTOP)
The programme is geared towards the development of young persons, facilitating opportunities to earn valuable work experience and making them more productive and efficient employees. Recent high school graduates are given the opportunity to develop a greater understanding of the working environment through placement in a firm.
At the end of this programme, trainees are supported to:
- Develop industry skills within their chosen vocations
- Develop job-readiness and entrepreneurship skills
- Strengthen employability/Core Skills
This programme is aimed towards recent high school graduates between the ages 17-23 years
Duration: 1 year

Registered Apprenticeship Programme
Apprentices are registered and assigned to a firm for on-the-job learning specific to a trade or skill that the business performs. Giving trainees the opportunity to learn directly from public and private sector industry specialists, the Registered Apprenticeship Programme (RAP) is a flexible and inclusive approach to job training.
At the end of this programme, trainees are supported to:
- Develop in-demand industry skills within their chosen vocations or professional paths
- Develop job-readiness and have an improved understanding of the nuances of the working environment
- Strengthen their overall employability and core competencies
This programme is specially designed for individuals over the age of 16 years who have completed a minimum secondary high school education at the grade 9 level.
Duration: 1 to 4 years.

Graduate Work Experience Programme (GWEP)
Our Graduate Work Experience Programme (GWEP) is carefully crafted to support graduates between the ages of 17 and 29 with little or no working experience in their field of study.
Offered in both private and public sector firms, GWEP is designed to help graduates with degrees attain practical and experiential knowledge of the working environment while contributing to their overall personal and professional development.
GWEP participants are supported to:
- Improve their awareness of workplace demands, standards and employer expectations
- Improve their employability and strengthen their core skill sets
- Develop a stronger practical understanding of their industry or field
- Develop in-demand industry skills and experience which they will be able to take to their next stage of employment or to higher-level training
Duration: 6 months

HOPE National Service Corps Programme
Offered to unattached youth between the ages of 17 and 29, the HOPE National Service Corps is designed to support young people who are serving as apprentices within the National Service Corps. Apprentices are exposed to the social and technical skills that can empower them to become well-rounded individuals making a meaningful contribution to the country’s social and economic development.
The goal of the programme is to support young people in finding meaningful work within an apprenticeship structure, while offering them the opportunity to be trained in a marketable skill.
Though training is mainly on-the-job, it is augmented by online content. In addition to emphasizing technical skills, the programme is also geared toward fostering the holistic development of participants, and as such, includes modules which teach a variety of life skills including conflict management, etiquette and deportment, as well as ethics.
Trainees are supported to:
- Develop and strengthen technical skills
- Develop and strengthen holistic life skills which promote overall personal development
- Matriculate into relevant HEART programmes
Duration: 6 months to 1 year.
