WorldSkills Competition and Conference
The WorldSkills Competition is the premier global platform for demonstrating technical and vocational excellence. The competition and conference bring together young skilled professionals, industry experts and policymakers to exchange knowledge, set new standards and celebrate innovation. Since 2007, the WorldSkills Conference has brought together leaders in education, government, industry and business from around the world to share best practices and explore emerging trends in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
For Jamaica, participation in both events provides a valuable opportunity to compete against the best the world has to offer while strengthening our commitment to workforce development and skills training.
Opening Ceremony
The Shanghai World Expo Cultural Center sparkled on Tuesday (September 22) as competitors from more than 65 countries, including Team Jamaica, marched into the arena for the opening ceremony.
Convened under the theme “Master Skills, Change Your Future”, the show combined stunning visuals, cultural displays and novel technologies, highlighting the transformational power of skills in shaping the lives and futures of individuals, industries and nations. From vibrant cultural performances to the integration of emerging technologies, the ceremony reflected the WorldSkills movement’s belief that skills are central to economic growth, innovation and opportunity.
Jamaica on the World Stage
Among those wearing the national colours and taking part in the opening ceremony were Jamaica’s WorldSkills competitors. Beginning Wednesday (September 23), competitors will spend up to six hours daily completing practical assignments under real-world conditions designed to assess their technical ability, precision, problem-solving skills and creativity.
Representing Jamaica are Rayon-Jai Pusey and Antonio Rolong in Autonomous Mobile Robotics, Courtenay Ferguson in ICT Network Infrastructure, Omar Cockett in Unmanned Aerial Systems, and Brandon Brown in Optoelectronics Technology. They begin competition following months of intense preparation and support from HEART/NSTA Trust and industry partners committed to advancing skills excellence and workforce readiness.
Jamaica’s WorldSkills Journey Beyond the Competition Floor
Alongside the competitors are HEART/NSTA Trust trainees who received scholarship opportunities to gain exposure to advanced technical training, emerging technologies and international best practices. Their participation represents an investment in developing the next generation of highly skilled Jamaican professionals while strengthening the country’s capacity in strategic and future-focused industries.
Two of the scholarship recipients were also selected to make presentations at the WorldSkills Conference as representatives of the International Student Programme. Their inclusion provides Jamaica with an opportunity to contribute directly to global discussions on skills development while showcasing the talent, innovation and perspectives of Jamaican trainees on an international stage.
The experience is expected to strengthen both their professional development and Jamaica’s ability to compete in an increasingly technology-driven and interconnected world.
Conference Delegates
HEART/NSTA Trust representatives are also participating in the WorldSkills Conference, where workforce development practitioners, policymakers and industry leaders are examining the future of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
Discussions are focusing on emerging technologies, sustainability, innovation and the skills required to compete in an increasingly global economy. Insights gained through these engagements will help inform workforce development strategies and strengthen HEART/NSTA Trust’s efforts to align training programmes with international standards and evolving industry needs.
Strengthening Jamaica’s Skills Future
As Jamaica continues to build a highly skilled and globally competitive workforce, participation in WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 demonstrates HEART/NSTA Trust’s commitment to exposing trainees, competitors and technical experts to international standards of excellence.
Whether through competition, scholarship opportunities or knowledge exchange, the experience will contribute to strengthening Jamaica’s workforce-development ecosystem and expanding opportunities for future generations.
As competition goes on in Shanghai, Jamaica’s presence is being felt not only through the performance of its competitors, but also through the contributions of its scholars and technical delegates. Together, they represent a national commitment to developing world-class talent, strengthening workforce competitiveness and ensuring that Jamaican skills continue to earn recognition on the global stage.
